Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

I am Miss Toms and I'm delighted to be teaching Year 6 this year.

In our class we are supported by Mrs Kotseva.

This term our topics are Evolution and Inheritance, Light Theory and Britain at War.

We have P.E on a Monday and swimming on a Wednesday.

Summer Term Learning

This term in English we will be using the books ‘Night of the Gargoyles’ and ‘Children of the King’ as a focus for our writing. We will have extra practise with our handwriting and spelling of Year 6 common exception words. In Reading we will continue to read individually and as a group, developing our Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explaining and Sequencing skills.

In Maths we will be focusing on translating and reflecting objects. Then we will be moving onto Geometry, Negative Numbers, Graphs and Averages.

In Science we will be learning about the way that light behaves, travelling in straight lines from a source or reflector, into the eye. We will explore how we see light and colours, and phenomena associated with light, including shadows, reflections and refraction.

We will be learning about Excel Spreadsheets and Google Sheets in Computing.

Our History topic this term will focus on Britain at War. We will discover the causes, events and consequences of the First and Second World Wars, the influence of new inventions on warfare, how life in Great Britain was affected and the legacy of the wars in the post-war period.

In D.T the children will be looking at significant engineers and bridges, focussing on strengthening techniques by building prototypes. For Art, we are learning a range of simple sewing stitches, including ways of recycling and repurposing old clothes and materials.

We will be taking part in the PSHCE Curriculum and completing the topics: ‘You’ve got a friend’ and ‘Reflect, Rewind and Replay’.

In R.E we will be asking ‘Does belief in Akhirah (life after death) help Muslims lead good lives?’.

All of the curriculum information can be found on the curriculum page on the website.

If you would like to speak to me about your child’s learning please contact the office and I will be in contact.

Please check the website regularly as we will be updating it with all of the wonderful learning that has been taking place.
