Year 5

I am Mr McCarten and am delighted to be teaching Year 4 this year.

The children have had an excellent first term and we are looking forward to the spring term.

In our class we are supported by Mrs Needham.

This term our topics are Misty Mountain, Winding river, and Vista's in Art

We have P.E on a Monday and Tuesday, Art on Wednesdays and violins on Friday’s.

Spring Term Learning

In the first half term of the New Year, we will be using Michael Morpurgo’s book ‘King of the Cloud Forests’ to analyse how we can write a piece of historical fiction. Students will have the opportunity to learn, and create performances about, ancient myths. We will be using the Talk4Writing scheme and our focus will be on dialogue, multi-clause sentences and fronted adverbials. We will also be regularly practicing our spellings of Year 3 and 4 common exception words. In reading we will be reading as a group and in pairs, sharpening our Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explaining and Sequencing skills.

In Maths we will be further exploring multiplication and division before moving on to Graphs, Fractions and Time.

In Science we will be learning about States of Matter. Throughout the Unit student will have the opportunity to investigate solids, liquids and gasses. Through a series of experiment, students will develop an understanding of the process of evaporation and the water cycle.

We will be learning about spreadsheets, writing for different audiences, Logo’s and animation throughout this term in computing.

Our Geography topic this term will focus on Misty Mountains and Winding rivers. In the unit I will be teaching students the characteristics and features of rivers and mountain ranges around the world. Children will be immersed in the exploration of ecosystems and processes that shape them and the land around them.

In Art the children will learn about the techniques artists use when composing landscape images, such as colour and atmosphere.

We will be taking part in the PSHCE curriculum and completing the topics: ‘Dreams and Goals’ and ‘Healthy Me’’.

In R.E. we will be continuing the Buddhism Enquiry and asking ‘could the Buddha’s teachings make the world a better place?’ For our Christian enquiry topic the children will be considering and discussing ‘Is forgiveness always possible for Christians?’

In PE we will be doing dodgeball and gymnastics.

We will also be exploring ‘Stop’ which is a musical unit focused on anti-bullying. Students will be receiving specialised instrumental lessons from the Herts Music Service.

All of the curriculum information can be found on our curriculum page.
