The Right of Withdrawal from Religious Education

Parents and carers have a legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education (RE) lessons. If you wish to exercise this right, please get in touch with the Headteacher in writing so we can discuss your request and any alternative arrangements.

Our school values open communication and will work with families to ensure that any decision is handled respectfully and in line with statutory guidance.

Why RE Matters

Religion and belief have become more visible in public life in recent years, making it important that all pupils have the opportunity to engage with RE. However, parents of pupils at community, foundation, or voluntary schools (or pupils themselves if aged 18 or over) may request that they be excused from all or part of RE. No reasons need to be given.

Before making a decision, parents are encouraged to:

  • Understand the aims of RE and what is covered in our curriculum.
  • Clarify whether the withdrawal applies to the whole RE curriculum or specific parts.

Important – Limitations to Withdrawal

  • If pupils are withdrawn from RE, the school has a duty to supervise them, but not to provide additional teaching. Pupils may work in another area of the school, such as the library or a breakout space.
  • While parents have the right to withdraw their children from RE, please note that children may encounter religious and belief content in other curriculum areas (e.g., History, PSHE, Citizenship) where there is no right of withdrawal.
  • Occasionally, pupils may raise spontaneous questions about religion or related issues during other lessons. Schools also promote community cohesion and understanding of identity, diversity, and emotions within both religious and non-religious contexts.

Managing the Right of Withdrawal

  • Withdrawal requests must be made in writing. The school will comply and excuse the pupil until the request is rescinded.
  • Pupils will usually remain on school premises where feasible and appropriate.
  • Although not legally required, it is good practice for the Headteacher to invite parents to discuss their request.
