Spelling

In line with national expectations set out in the National Curriculum, Maple Grove follows a consistent, structured approach to spelling across the school.

Spelling is taught systematically through dedicated lessons during the week. We begin by ensuring that all children access a high-quality phonics programme, following the Little Wandle scheme. In Year 2, children transition from Phase 5 phonics to more formal spelling lessons. At a point appropriate to the cohort and to individual pupils, systematic spelling teaching is introduced alongside ongoing phonics sessions.

At Maple Grove, we follow the HfL Essential Spelling scheme, which supports staff in planning for clear progression in spelling skills and ensures a consistent approach across year groups. Class teachers also track and monitor pupils’ progress in learning common exception words and the statutory spelling lists.

Key vocabulary linked to topic work and specific English units is shared with pupils through word banks and other strategies. There is a clear expectation that children will use these words accurately in their written work. Where appropriate, and at the teacher’s discretion, spelling lists or word banks may also be shared with parents.

Spelling is also taught and discussed as it arises naturally within lessons, particularly when a pattern, rule, or common misconception is identified. When marking work, no more than three spellings are highlighted. These are chosen based on the teacher’s professional judgement and their understanding of each child’s individual stage of development.
