Relationships, Health and Sex Education

As part of every child’s educational experience at Maple Grove, we promote personal well-being and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE) programme. This programme equips children with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, and practical skills they need to lead healthy, safe, productive, and fulfilling lives—both now and in the future.

In 2019, the Department for Education published statutory guidance on Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education, which became mandatory for all schools in September 2020. This guidance focuses on promoting healthy relationships and safeguarding children in today’s world. It covers physical and mental health, emotional well-being, and the social aspects of growing up, helping children develop the skills and values needed for safe, respectful relationships and responsible decision-making.

By the end of primary school, children are expected to meet objectives grouped under the following headings:

Relationships Education:

  • Families and people who care for me
  • Caring friendships
  • Respectful relationships
  • Online relationships
  • Being safe

Health Education:

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Internet safety and harms
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy eating
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • Health and prevention
  • Basic first aid
  • Changing adolescent body

Our curriculum is carefully planned from EYFS to Year 6 to meet all these objectives.

We have recently reviewed our curriculum to strengthen cross-curricular links between our PSHE and RSE schemes, ensuring a cohesive and comprehensive approach to children’s development.

In July 2024, we consulted with parents about our updated policy and curriculum. 85% of respondents agreed that the content is taught at an age-appropriate time. Our curriculum reflects statutory guidance, our school values, and pupil voice, ensuring it meets the needs of our community.
