Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

I am Miss Toms and am delighted to be teaching Year 6 this year.

The children have all settled in well and are looking forward to the year ahead.

In our class we are supported by Mrs Kotseva.

This term our topics are The Circulatory System and Maafa History.

We have P.E twice a week on a Monday and Friday (Cricket).

Autumn Term Learning

This term in English we will be using the books ‘Bruce Parry’ and ‘The Earthquake’ as a focus for our writing. We will have extra practise with our handwriting and spelling of Year 6 common exception words. In Reading we will continue to read individually and as a group, developing our Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explaining and Sequencing skills.

In Maths we will be focusing on counting and working with numbers to 10 million. Then we will be moving onto Multiplication, Division, Common Factors and Prime Numbers.

In Science we will be learning about the transport role of the human circulatory system, its main parts and primary functions. We will also be learning about healthy lifestyle choices and the effects of harmful substances on the body.

We will be learning about coding, how to stay safe on line and then studying Questioning in computing.

Our History topic this term is Maafa History. We will be focusing on the development of the slave trade in Africa. We will explore Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, the causes and consequences of the European colonisation of Africa and the worldwide communities that make up the African diaspora.

Our Geography topic this term will focus on our changing world. The children will explore the features of Earth, time zones and lines of latitude and longitude to pinpoint places on a map. We will find out more about map scales, grid references, contour lines and map symbols. They will then go on to study climate change, the importance of global trade and patterns of human settlements.

In Art and D.T the children will be planning and making meals, understanding the importance of a healthy daily menu.

We will be taking part in the PSHCE Curriculum and completing the topics: ‘Being

Me in My World’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’.

In R.E we will be asking ‘What is the best way for a Muslim to show commitment to God’ and ‘Do Christmas celebrations and traditions help Christians understand who Jesus was and why he was born?’

In PE we will be focusing on ball skills, target games and how to keep fit.
