Year 5

Welcome to Year 5


I am Miss Lawson and am delighted to be teaching Year 5 this year.

The children have all settled in well and are looking forward to the year ahead.

In our class we are supported by Mrs Dancer and Mrs Dodge.

This term our topics are Dynamic Dynasties and Investigating Our World.


We have P.E on a Monday and Friday.



Autumn Term Learning


This term in English we will be exploring a variety of books such as Wonder, Street Child and Floodland to learn reading strategies such as inference, prediction and recognising literary elements. In writing we will be exploring playscripts, rags to riches stories, report writing and setting descriptions. We will be building on our understanding of simple, compound and complex sentences, revising word classes (nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives) and learning how to use relative clauses, parenthesis and adverbs of possibility.  


In Maths we will be focusing on numbers to 1000000. Then we will be moving onto addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division two and three digit numbers. We will also be looking at factors and multiples, prime and composite numbers, and square and cube numbers.


In Science we will be learning about forces and mechanisms.  Later in the term our topic will be Earth and space, exploring information about our solar system.


We will be learning about coding, how to stay safe on line and then looking at how to use spreadsheets. 


Our History topic this term is Dynamic Dynasties. This focuses on the history of ancient China, focusing primarily on the Shang Dynasty, and explores the lasting legacy of the first five Chinese dynasties, some of which can still be seen in the world today.


Our Geography topic this term is called, Investigating our World. The children will learn about locating map features using a range of methods. They will learn about the Prime Meridian, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and worldwide time zones and study interconnected climate zones, vegetation belts and biomes. Children learn about human geography and capital cities worldwide before looking at the UK motorway network and settlements. 


In Art and D.T the children will be mixing tints, tones and shades to create landscapes. We will also look at pneumatics to design and make a pneumatic machine.


We will be taking part in the PSHE Curriculum and completing the topics: ‘Being  

Me in My World’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’.


In R.E we will be exploring the question ‘How far would a Sikh go for his/her religion?’ and enquire into the Christmas story.


In PE we will have a sports coach, as well as cricket lessons.
