Welcome to Year 2

I am Miss Cripps and I am delighted to be teaching Year 2 this year.

The children have all settled in well and we are looking forward to the year ahead.

In our class we are supported by Miss Reilly and Mrs Trundley (1:1 LSA)

This term our topic is Movers and Shakers.

We have P.E on a Monday and a Friday.

This term in English we will be using the books ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ and ‘Queen Elizabeth II’, as a focus for our writing. We will be focusing on capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, making sure our sentences make sense, and using our sounds to spell. We will continue to focus on our handwriting and spelling of Year 1 and 2 common exception words. In Reading we will continue to read individually and as a group, developing our vocabulary, inference, prediction, explaining and sequencing skills.

In Maths we will be focusing on counting and working with numbers to 100. Then we will be moving onto addition and subtraction, multiplication of 2, 5 and 10, and length and Mass.

In Science we will be learning about the basic needs of humans for survival, including the importance of exercise and nutrition and good hygiene. We will also be learning about habitats, the children will have the opportunity to explore what lives in a habitat, how habitats can change throughout the year and what different animals eat in their habitats.

In Computing we will be learning about coding, how to stay safe on line and using spreadsheets.

Our History topic this term is Movers and Shakers. This focusses on historically significant people who have had a major impact on the world. They will learn to use timelines, stories and historical sources to find out about the people featured and use historical models to explore their significance.

Our Geography topic this term will focus on exploring the world. The children will learn about atlases, maps and cardinal compass points. They learn about the characteristics of the four countries of the United Kingdom and find out why there are hot, temperate and cold places around the world.

It includes an exploration of primary and secondary colours and how artists use colour in their artwork.
